Having left the club in 2006, The Posh Blog decided to catch up with former Posh winger Ryan Semple. I would like to say a special thank you of course to Ryan for taking the time to participate in this Q+A.1.Despite being a member of the squad at a particularly turbulent time in the clubs history, as highlighted by the Big Ron Manager programme, do you have fond times of your time at posh? To be honest I have nothing but great memories of my time at Posh. Its my hometown club & is somewhere where I grew up, not just as a player but a person too. Having played there from the age of 8 I had & still have many friends there, not just the playing staff but people behind the scenes too. Being involved with the club at Centre of excellence level has given me the opportunity to work back there & its something Im really enjoying & am grateful for.2.With the club and fans being publicly humiliated by the behind the scenes goings on shown on TV, what was it like, and how did this affect you as a player?A lot of people comment on what happened on the Big Ron Manager show & obviously talk about all the negative things that happened. Watching it back when it was aired it definitely wasnt easy viewing at times but it was what it was meant to be, an entertaining warts & all look at how a lower league club is ran on & off Lenny Dykstra Jersey the pitch. On a personal level it was an experience I wont forget! It gave me a bit of an insight into what it may be like in big brother, having a camera in your face all the time & you really do actually forget the camera is there after a while. Thats why it made suchgripping viewing! Fans should also remember that it was this show that attracted Darrah Macanthony to the club so without Big Ron I doubt we wouldve seen the succe s weve had on the pitchfollowing the show.Semple in action for The Posh3. With the show exposing frictions behind the scenes such as the Arber-Carden bust up and Steve Bleasedales apparent short temper, what was the atmosphere in the dre sing room like at this time? The dre sing room during this period was without doubt a little bit strange. One thing I will say though isplayer fall outs & scuffles are acommon thing in any dre sing room, once its over 99.9% of the time its forgotten by both players. The difference in our case was it was filmed & showed on national tv!If Im honest the show probably created a small split in terms of players who dealt with the cameras ok & those who it affected a little bit more. The younger lads seemed to deal with it a little more in their stride but the more experienced players didnt like it at all which is understandable. At the start of the show we were in a very strong position to at least finish in the play offs but in the end we mi sed out on the final day, maybe the show was one of the reasons why we didnt make it but it certainly wasnt the only or biggest factor. 4.I believe you worked under the management of Steve Bleasdale, Mark Wright and Barry Fry but who did you enjoy working with the most?I worked with Barry Fry, Steve Bleasdale, Mark Wright & Keith Alexander during my time at Posh albeit only pre season with Keith before I moved to Lincoln. I got on with all4 & enjoyed them for different reasons. Barry gave me my debut at 17 & Ill always be grateful to him for that. He kept things very simple & just told me to get the ball & run at defenders! I believe he shouldve played me more but the side we had at that time were struggling & his reasons for not playing me more was he didnt want a young player in the firing line when we were getting beat most weeks. Under Mark Wright I played most of my Posh appearances & I liked him as a manager. His time was cut short as manager unfortunately & I think if hed have stayed we would of minimum finished up in the playoffs. Bleo was Darryl Strawberry Jersey a really good coach under Wright but I think when he took over as manager, the extra responsibility coupled with the Big Ron Effect probably was too much for him to handle, understandably for a manager starting his 1st job in league football. Keith was probably the nicest guy of all of them & the only reason I left was to get more game time somewhere else (or so I thought!) Its extremelytragic to see what happened to him & he really was one of footballs good guys.In action for his current club, Boston5.Do you still look out for the clubs fortunes and do you still have any contact with anyone at the club such as Barry Fry or any former players formally at the club?Now Ive been working at the club for close to 2 years in the Centre of Excellence department its been a lot easier to keep in touch with people at the club. With Jamie Day leaving in the summer there are now no players at the club who was there when I was but through Jamie Ive got to know quite a few of them personally. Other than Jamie from when I was there I still speak toa lot of the lads, in particular Sean St Ledger, Luke Steele& Danny Crow. Ive known a lot of them most of my life so obviously were Gary Carter Jersey all close.I still speak to Baz every now & then. The great thing about him is you can pick up the phone & call him for anything & hell do whatever he can to help. Thats something a lot of people dont see about him.6.Like every young footballer you had big hopes for your future in the game, however, at the beginning of your Posh career, you suffered a leg break in 2003. How do you think this affected your progre s as a footballer?Breaking my leg in March 2003 was obviously a big setback. Id made my debut about 6 months earlier & played a handful of games prior to the injury. It definitely set me back somewhat but there is no way I cla s it as the reason why I didnt go on to play even more games for Posh or getting a big money move. If you look at the amount of appearances I made after I broke my leg then its clear the injury didnt affect my performance too much once I was fully healed. Also once Keith came in I knew my days at Posh were numbered under him as his style of play was to play without wingers. 7. Unfortunately for yourself, you were released at the end of the 2005-2006 season which many Posh fans thought was a mistake. What was your reaction to this, because you couldnt be blamed if you wanted to jump ship with the club in the state it was in? Like I say above the only reason I wanted to leave Posh was the fact of being desperate to play more games. The previous season under Wright/Bleasdale Id made 40 appearances in all comps & I wanted to improve on that, not go backwards. Under Keith I knew I was going to be a bit part player with his 5-2-3 style of play & the last thing I wanted to do was stick around & not play. Looking back I was maybe too quick to jump ship7 take the 1st offer which came my way but hindsight is a wonderful thing! I would of loved to of had the chance to play under Darren Ferguson in what was to be a great time in the clubs recent history.Semple went looking for first team football at Lincoln8. After leaving the club in 2006 Steven Matz Jersey , and after initially signing a 2 year deal at Lincoln City, you found yourself struggling to settle down at a club having played at a number of clubs and levels, how did you enjoy this period in your career?The 2 years after leaving Posh were by far& away the hardest Ive ever had to deal with. With things turning sour at Lincoln pretty quickly & having a succe sion of niggly injuries it would be fair it was hard to keep motivated & I fell slightly out of love with the game. Friends & family certainly helped me during the difficult times & without doubt I grew up so much in this period.Semps found himself out on loan at teams such as Chester and Rushden9.In the 2008-2009 season you seemed to finally find your feet playing in the United Counties Premier Division for Deeping Rangers. Having a succe sful season here and scoring 30 goals in 36 appearances, did you feel that you could still play at a higher level than the United Counties Premier Division? I also have to ask, many Posh fans remember you as a right midfielder, how did you achieve such an impre sive goal scoring record from playing out wide!?The move to Deeping was at the time a little daunting but in the end was a fantastic experience. The reason I dropped that far down was simple, no other club showed any interest! Id been on trial at Exeter City & made the decision that if I didnt get offered anything there I was going to move back to Peterborough & concentrate on opening my soccer school. Dave Simpson the a sistant at the time was a coach at posh when I was there as a kid & asked if Id like to come down & it went from there. I still believed I could play at a higher level& had offers to go higher almost straight away after signingbut going there & staying loyal to them really helped me get the hunger & enthusiasm for the game back. The manager at the time, Tuncay Korkmaz was absolutely brilliant & we still keep in touch now. Scoring 31 goals that year was a great achievement for me & is by a distance, the most Ive scored in 1 season. Although I was predominantly playing wide, I was allowed to roam & affect the game how I saw fit which obviously helped!10.Towards the end of the 2009-2010 season you signed for Boston United who, despite their well documented off field problems in recent years, won promotion to the Blue Square North via the play offs. With a positive start to the season, do you see your Boston team in for another succe sful season?Im really enjoying it at Boston. With the squad being young, its the 1st time Ive ever been seen as one of the experienced players Michael Conforto Jersey & I really enjoy having that extra bit of responsibility. We have some really talented players & without doubt 2 or 3 will have football league clubs sniffing around them. Hopefully though theyll make that step up with us as the fans deserve it after being put through the wringer in recent years! Weve started well & if we can keep that momentum from last season going then who knows where itll take us. The league is that little bit tougher but we know what it takes to get promoted & that can count for a lot, just look at Posh!Finding the back of the net for Boston 11.Boston United isnt like your normal football club. What is it like working with two managers (Paul Hurst and Rob Scott)? Working under Rob Scott & Paul Hurst has been really enjoyable too. They both work so well together & are well & truly winners which rubs off on the whole club. Hopefully we can be succe sful as a club this season as I cant see it being too long before other clubs come after them.12.Lastly, I understand you have your own soccer school dedicated to helping young children and the local community. Has this been succe sful for you, and is coaching something you would want to do profe sionally?I started the soccer school in 2008, initially putting on a 2 week summer camp during the holidays.I now do after school clubs, PE le sons & lunch time se sions & havestarted doing multi-sports to appeal to a wider audience. I also work in some of the areas special needs collages which I really enjoy.
