2024 Dodgers in review: Freddie Freeman - Tepera36 - 03-12-2025

The 2024 season was particularly challenging for Los Angeles Dodgers' first baseman, Freddie Freeman, as he navigated personal hardships and injuries. Before the season commenced, there was significant excitement surrounding the Dodgers' formidable trio: Freeman, Mookie Betts, and reigning American League MVP, Shohei Ohtani.
Freeman's season began steadily, with a batting average of .302 by the end of April, though he had only two home runs during that period. His power numbers improved over May and June, hitting ten home runs and elevating his on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) from .855 to .899. This performance earned him his eighth All-Star selection and fourth consecutive appearance, serving as a backup to starting first baseman Bryce Harper.
Mid-season, Freeman faced a significant personal challenge when his three-year-old son, Maximus, was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder. Maximus's condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to hospitalization and intensive care. Freeman took an eight-game leave to be with his family during this critical time. Upon returning on August 5, Freeman received a standing ovation, and that same day, Maximus was discharged from the hospital.Jazz Chisholm Jr. Shirt
Post his return, Freeman played 43 regular-season games, posting a .270 batting average with six home runs and 22 RBIs. On September 26, he suffered a right ankle sprain, causing him to miss the final regular-season series. Despite the injury, Freeman participated in the National League Division Series (NLDS) against the Padres, though his performance was limited due to his condition. In the National League Championship Series (NLCS) against the Mets, he continued to struggle, reflecting the impact of his injuries.
In the World Series opener against the New York Yankees, Freeman delivered a historic walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning, marking the first such feat in World Series history. He continued his remarkable performance by hitting home runs in each of the next three games, setting a record for homering in six consecutive World Series games. Freeman concluded the series with a .300 batting average, four home runs, and 12 RBIs, earning him the World Series MVP title.

Following the season, Freeman underwent surgery on his right ankle and is expected to be ready for spring training. Despite playing in 147 games—his fewest in a full season since 2017—he maintained consistent power numbers, hitting over 20 home runs. However, his .854 OPS was his lowest since 2015, and it was the first season during his tenure with the Dodgers that he did not record at least 100 RBIs or 40 doubles. As he approaches his age-35 season in 2025, there is optimism that Freeman will continue to be a productive force for the Dodgers.
